In the healthcare industry, UI/UX design is more than just enhancing aesthetics; it’s about improving patient outcomes and streamlining operations. 

A report by the US Food and Drug Administration showed that design is one of the leading causes of medical device recall. In this article, we’ll look at the critical role UI/UX plays in healthcare.

What is  User-centred design?

User-centred design is a design approach that focuses on the end-users and their needs throughout the design process.  This type of design requires users to be actively involved in the design and development process, collecting feedback and iteration of the feedback. 

User-centred Design in Healthcare

This is applying the principles and methods of user-centred design to developing healthcare systems, products and services. This means a product designed for healthcare professionals takes their needs and working context into consideration in the design process and likewise for products designed for patients. Some key considerations for creating user-centred designs in healthcare are:

  1. Patient-Centred Care: In healthcare, patients are the primary end-users, and their needs, preferences, and experiences are central to user-centred design. This involves understanding and addressing the unique needs of patients to improve the quality of care and their overall healthcare experience.

  1. Safety and Efficacy: The safety and effectiveness of medical treatments and interventions cannot be overemphasised.  System and device design should minimise errors and improve the quality of care.
  1. Empathy-driven Design: Understanding the emotional state and needs of both healthcare professionals and patients is crucial. Designers need to empathise with the end-users to create solutions that truly resonate with them.
  1. Accessibility and Inclusivity: Healthcare products and services should be designed for accessibility. Taking key consideration of those with disabilities or special needs,  user-centred design in healthcare involves considerations for inclusivity and accessibility.
  1. Feedback Mechanism: A mechanism for feedback should be put in place to ensure that there is continuous improvement in the experience of users. It allows for ongoing improvements based on real-world usage and evolving needs.
